There may be hope for people suffering from multiple sclerosis
(MS), according to M.A. Moscarello at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. (MS has most commonly affected adults in
the past, but the numbers of cases involving children are increasing.) Nobody knows what exactly causes MS, but the disease
causes membranous nerve coverings to break down, disabling rapid nerve conduction. Recent research on a drug called paclitaxel,
which is also used to treat cancer, has led to clinical trials with very promising results. The drug attenuates the disease,
possibly by inhibiting changes in the brain that precede the nerve sheath breakdown. A more extensive trial, involving 190
MS patients, began early this spring in several centres across Canada.
